  11. "THE HISTORICAL BOERBOEL IN SOUTH AFRICA:

There are still areas in South Africa where you find boerboels on the farms that still do what they were originally bred for,,,,,'work, work as they were intended ', not as we say they should. There are no fancy titles, no obedience class on Thursday evenings. No string of commands to impress the folks at the next 'class, no discussion about the decades they've been doing what they've been doing. Just farmers with farm dogs, doing what they need to do to run their farm. I will say this though, when the farmer says to get in the truck,,,,that dog knows he/she needs to get in the truck,,,,,,if the farmer indicates that some scallywag or that some critter shouldn't be where it is,,,,,the boerboel needs to understand this and act accordingly, the ones I seen did.

The boerboels found on every farm in the area are part of daily farming life. They accompany their owners wherever and everywhere their owner goes. It may appear as if this boerboel is climbing into the back of the truck. Actually I took the picture as she was in mid jump, she was jumping into the back of the pickup with tailgate closed, (the other one in the truck had already jumped in).

In this semi dessert area when farmers do their work in the veldt (field to us), the boerboels go roaming, hunting porcupines, rabbits, snakes, mongoose, rock rabbits and keeping baboons at bay. (This is the farm where I said the farmer seemed more proud of his boerboel's teeth than anything else about his dog. They were the largest canine teeth I've ever seen on a 'tame' animal). They have a lot of baboons in the area and the boerboel 'did' keep the baboons out of the crops. Often when farmers have finished their work, their boerboels are still out on their excursions and left to return home themselves, often times the return home may be many miles away. This, I'm told, is a regular occurrence. This photos show what some of these boerboels look like. The muscle development that accompanies daily hard work is
    imagem indisponível
evident. The boerboels' you see in these pics, their daily diet consists of mealy meal (cooked cornmeal)with milk and only get game offal and bones when it is available. This farmer said that mealy meal and milk is all he has ever fed his dogs, , (I don't know if I spelled mealy the way it is spelled over there. As I said offal and bones are a treat and not a way of life for his dogs. Unbelievably they are in excellent condition and certainly some of the best conditioned boerboels I have seen in Africa.

  12. There has been a lot of discussion on how the protective
instinct of the boerboel should be preserved. But before
this can be done one should try to establish what the BB temperament
    is like and why.

The Boerboels (all three types) were bred on the farm. Farms
were big, no fences, lots of workers during the day, strangers
for trading, life stock around etc

The three types differ in build, gene pool, natural surrounding in which they
    were bred and main function.

    In my opinion:
The boerboel is not a breed, it is a term.
A large farm dog with unknown origin.

All these dogs have a few things in common, no matter
what gene pool they came from.

3 criteria were used for breeding:

-be good with the family and their children
    -leave the life stock alone
    -bite unwanted strangers

So now in order to do this certain qualities were required

1.social behavior with other dogs because dogs roam around on farms
also single dogs offer no protection against serious attacks or predators.

2.low hunting instinct combined with loyalty to the owner and the property
there is no use for a guard dog which goes hunting all the time and can´t
protect the house. Which means that the dog need to have strong defensive
drive and a lower prey drive.

3.calm and balanced dogs-hyperactive which need to run are not there
to protect the property either. And disturb the peace.

4.dogs needs to know the difference between friend and enemy because aggressive
dogs would have to be locked away and could not provide proper protection all the time.
Also need to know when workers are allowed where and when.

5.the dog would need a good protective instinct within a pack.

6.The dog would need a natural instinct to guard and bite because over worked
farmers rarely took the time to train their dogs and incorrect behavior would be
    punished severely.

    7. bb must be social with dog behaved kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let´s look at these points singly.

    1. The boerboel which is properly raised and socialized lives perfectly in the pack.

    2. The boerboel likes to chase animals for a short period but tends not to follow up.
In my eyes rather territorial behavior than hunting instinct. Non of my dogs ever tried to run
away from me or the pack while walking, not one ever tried a much appreciate fact since i
spend half of my youth trying to find back hunting dogs in the
forest. Everybody who ever had a German hunting terrier knows what I am talking about.

    3. The boerboel I know is calm and balanced. We live on 6 acres, the doors are mostly open
and if I am on the computer all the dogs stay around me, non of them wonders around
except going to the toilet outside. The boerboel loves companionship for the dog it makes
no difference if you walk for hours or just take him with you on your daily trips in the car.

    4. The absolute strength of the boerboel and greatly misunderstood by people
who have not enough experience with the breed. Only because your boerboel
is not showing aggression doesn´t mean that he would not protect you. Every
one can walk on my property as long as they are peaceful and in the right state of mind.
Just watch out when a friend comes to visit and had a bad day at work or a few drinks.
You ll see the boerboel. Many people don´t understand the BB and consider them
unpredictable. They are not they are just very different from other breeds.
When you go to farms where there many dogs, all is peaceful, workers doing their
jobs, dogs minding their own business, so you spend time there and talk dog
all oversudden there is aggression, dogs going wild, starting to force the farm workers away
, hell is breaking loose. So you wonder what is going on and ask the farmer what is going on
and he points at the horizon, the sun has just set, and he only replies"it is getting dark.
But you can just see it, just. They know when the workers are aloud on the property
and ´when not. I have seen it many, many times at many places. It seems to be in them.

Also here was a big scandal in the newspapers. "boerboels terrorizing farm worker".
Long story but in the end they admitted that the dogs only attacked them
when they tried to go into the house or came to close to the children. Otherwise
they could do their work undisturbed. Good dogs In my opinion..

Also they do not like when someone screams at you or you screamed at someone.
Once a drunk person came into our office and started causing commotion. Ask him
friendly to leave and he refused. It went on and on. Lara and Nostra still sleeping.
After a while a lost my temper: " get the f... out of here," as I said it the dogs jumped over the desk and the reception desk
and chased him out of the door. but they stopped right at the door.
The boerboel is also very territorial and can be very aggressive in its own territory
but ease as soon as taken out of there.

I have a bitch no one I know would dare to take her out of her kennel. Not even think of it
but take her out and she is the most pleasant dog you ll ever met or try to take something out
of my car while kekoa is in the car. no way, no way. That is also a trait which I quite appreciate.

The ability to judge a situation well is very important because it allows me to take my dogs
with everywhere and provide proper protection.

    5. Pack protective behavior: That is one of the most fascinating traits of the boerboel.
and I ll produce the video on this as soon as I have the necessary cash. They act in formation,
the formation change depending on size of the pack, they shift, change automatically and adapt to the
situation. There are scouts, wings, backup and guards. At no time I am alone, no matter what happens one dog stays with me.
In my opinion that is the natural instinct which must be preserved.

    6. Take a boerboel and try to make him bite. sofar all of them did. very quickly. Also when I start hitting
a punching bag most of my dogs start attacking the bag if I let them.

Doing Schutzhund, herding, rescue etc is great and can take the boerboel to new dimensions
but it has little to do with the historical boerhounds, boermastiff, the boele and later the boerboel.
I prefer to look in to the future of the boerboel rather than getting stuck with history but it must be
seen clearly in order to understand the dog.

Someone who doesn´t know the Boers and the history of South Africa will struggle to understand
this breed entirely no matter how much experience with other breeds they have.

This is based on my own personal experience and this is how I perceive the boerboel.
Any kind of work can be done and it is good thing to work your dogs, even if it is only for spending
time with them. The points mentioned above are necessary traits in order to be a great
farm dog. This is also the natural protective instinct which I have experienced and need to be preserved.
any organization or person that works out trial in order to test this has my support.
