“Obviously we were disappointed that the court dismissed the suppression motion, but we’ll see what happens next,” said Terry Hughes who is Mathis’ lawyer.
“No one answered any of our flyers,” said mother Maggie Sinnett. “You go looking everywhere, but you don’t know where to look. You feel lost. You feel hopeless.”
Police said the couple only needed about 60 seconds to case the store. They were walking through the store pushing a stroller, and managed to steal a Chihuahua puppy priced at $999.
“We take the issue of dangerous dogs and alleged organized dog fighting very seriously and would encourage anyone with concerns to contact us,” DI Upton said.

According to department spokesperson Jonah Spangenthal-Lee, she “tried to hold on to the leash, but the suspects shoved her to the ground, grabbed the dog, and ran off. The victim told officers the female suspect yelled ‘it’s my dog’ as she fled.”
“My assumption is that that harness had to be cut off from her, it didn’t just come off because it had grown into her neck so far,” Mark Plyter of the Humane Society of Wayne County said.
“When we were cleaning her up, I actually saw a tear come down her face. I’ve never seen that before. This dog was in a lot of pain, and I think she knew it was going to be the end. I told the dog that I wouldn’t let her die.”
According to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, Peck has been investigated many times in several other jurisdictions, including both California and Wyoming. All of the investigations revolve around allegations of animal hoarding, neglect and abuse.
